Sample Blocks

Make two log cabin blocks in the courthouse steps style. One will have a black center and will move to white on the outside edges. The other will start with white and move to black on the outside. Block will be 11" x 11" finished in quilt and 11 1/2" x 11 1/2" before sewing into quilt.

Fabric- You will need six different fabrics. Choose one white, one black and four shades of grey from light grey to dark gray. Fabric can be solids and/or prints. Just make sure that the prints show a dominant value - squint to determine where each fits in the value range between white and black.

* All pieces can be cut from one strip of fabric for each color which is 1 1/2" x 44".

Alternate cutting option:
1. Cut one 44" strip which is 1 1/2" wide for each of the six fabrics.

2. From Black and White strip (each)
Cut 1 piece 1 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 9 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 11 1/2"

3. From Grey 1 (lightest) and Grey 4 (darkest) (each)
Cut 2 pieces 1 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 3 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 7 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 9 1/2"

4. From Grey 2 and Grey 3 (Middle value greys) (each)
Cut 2 pieces 3 1/2"
Cut 4 pieces 5 1/2"
Cut 2 pieces 7 1/2"

Sewing Directions For Block with white center

1. Sew two Grey 1-A to each side of white center
2. Sew two Grey 1-B to top and bottom of white center
3. Sew two Grey 2-A to each side from step 2
4. Sew two Grey 2-B to top and bottom from step 3
5. Sew two Grey 3-A to each side of step 4
6. Sew two Grey 3-B to top and bottome of step 5
7. Sew two Grey 4-A to each side of step 6
8. Sew two Grey 4-B to top and bottome of step 7
9. Sew two Black-A to each side of step 8
10. Sew two Black-B to top and bottom of step 9

Sewing Directions For Block with black center

1. Sew two Grey 4-A to each side of white center
2. Sew two Grey 4-B to top and bottom of white center
